Text adventure games online, free and in the browser
No download, no install, no account full of settings before you start. Open a scenario and take the first turn.
Why text games came back
Text games never needed a graphics budget, which is why they used to be everywhere — and why they were also, for years, extremely limited. Every response had to be typed out by a human author in advance, so the worlds were small and the parser was fussy.
What changed is that the author no longer has to write every branch. The AI writes the passage for whatever you did, so an online text game can now be genuinely open instead of a maze of pre-written rooms.
What playing online actually gets you
It gets you the first turn immediately. There is nothing to download, nothing to patch, and no hardware requirement past a browser — a laptop at work, a phone on a bus, a tablet in the evening.
Your stories live with your account rather than on one machine, so a world you started in the browser is waiting in the iOS or Android app, at the same scene.
Where to start
If you want something already built, the community shelf has scenarios with an opening situation and a cast ready to go — a sunken library that has started cataloguing again, a harvest of machines that woke early and elected a mayor.
If you would rather begin from nothing, write two lines about a place and a problem. MythSmith fills in the geography, the factions and the people, and then it is your turn.
What you get
No install
Runs in the browser. Nothing to download before the first turn.
Free to play
The core game costs nothing and needs no credit card.
Community scenarios
Start inside a world someone else already built, or publish your own.
Picks up anywhere
Stories follow your account across web, iOS and Android.
Plain English input
No parser syntax, no verb list, no "I don’t understand that".
Endless replay
The same scenario goes somewhere different every time you run it.
Questions, answered.
Do I need to download anything to play?
No. MythSmith plays in the browser, and native iOS and Android apps are available if you prefer them.
Are these text adventure games really free?
Yes. Playing, writing turns and building your own scenarios are all free. Paid plans add wider context, more story memory and credits for scene art.
Do I need an account?
You need one to keep a story and pick it up on another device — that is what lets a world follow you from the browser to the app.
What kinds of worlds can I play?
Anything you can describe: fantasy quests, sci-fi, horror, mystery, historical, or a quiet story with no monsters in it at all.
