An AI Dungeon alternative worth a look
AI Dungeon introduced a lot of people to AI-written adventures. If you are looking around for another one, this is what MythSmith is and how it plays.
The same idea, built our way
The premise is the one you already know: you type what you do, and an AI writes the world’s answer. No branching menus, no fixed ending, no author who has to have thought of your idea first.
What we have spent our time on is the part that decides whether an AI adventure is still fun in hour six — keeping the world consistent. Story memory carries what has happened; story cards pin the facts you never want drifting; tone controls hold a world at the register you chose instead of sliding somewhere else over a long session.
What you get on the free tier
The whole game. Starting a story, taking every turn, building your own scenario and continuing a world all cost nothing, with no credit card to begin.
Paid plans exist for people running long campaigns — a wider context window, more story memory slots, and monthly credits for scene art. They make a big world easier to hold together; they are not a gate in front of the game.
How to try it in five minutes
Pick a community scenario off the shelf and take three turns. That is usually enough to tell whether a storyteller is actually listening to you or just producing atmosphere in your general direction.
Then write your own opening — two lines is plenty — and watch what gets built around it. If you keep a character or a world you liked elsewhere, describe them in the opening and carry them straight over.
What you get
Unscripted by design
Nothing past your opening line is pre-written, so no two runs land the same way.
Built for long campaigns
Memory and story cards are the feature, not an afterthought.
Bring your own world
Describe a setting or a character you already play and start there.
Tone and safety controls
Set how dark a world is allowed to get, and change it mid-story.
Free to start
No card, no trial clock, no download needed to take the first turn.
Web, iOS and Android
One story, whichever device is in your hand.
Questions, answered.
Can I bring a story or character over from another AI adventure game?
Not as a file import, but in practice yes: describe the character and the world in your opening, or lay the key facts out in story cards, and you can pick the campaign back up from wherever it stopped.
Is MythSmith free?
Yes — the core game is free forever, including writing your own scenarios. Paid plans add wider context, more story memory and credits for scene art.
What makes it different from a general AI chatbot?
Persistent world state and a game around it: scenarios, story cards, memory, tone controls, and a storyteller tuned for narration rather than conversation.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes — there are native iOS and Android apps, and the same worlds are there when you open it on the web.
